Google Voice Available Today

E-mail Print PDF

Google's telephony management application Google Voice is now open to all U.S. residents, according to PC World.  As of today, the company has removed the requirement for prospective users to receive an invitation in order to sign up for the service.  Already, there are 1 million people with Google Voice accounts. Service features include a single phone number that, when called, rings a person's multiple lines, such as their home, office and cellular phone. Google Voice also offers voicemail message transcription, free calls to the U.S. and Canada, low international calling rates, conference call capability and a central, Web-based voicemail inbox. A subset of Google Voice features can also be used by people who don't want to get the single Google "phone number for life," but rather use one of their existing lines.

"We're proud of the progress we've made with Google Voice over the last few years, and we're still just scratching the surface of what's possible when you combine your regular phone service with the latest web technology," wrote Google Voice Product Managers Craig Walker and Vincent Paquet in an official blog post.

IDC analyst Al Hilwa sees Google Voice as a clear attempt by the company to go head-to-head against Skype and attract the attention of people using IP-based voice services.

"With the focus on monetization in telephony shifting away from the actual voice services and minutes by carriers, it looks like that area may in time be ceded to IP-based voice services such as Google Voice," Hilwa said via e-mail. "Availability of Google Voice on smartphones and other mobile platforms will put pressure on mobile carriers to further unbundle their services.

Google Changes Value of Long Tail Searches

E-mail Print PDF

Google recently announced changes on how it categorizes and value long tail searches. The “long tail” in relation to search engine traffic is the visitors you get who have used complex or less popular queries on a search engine.

According to an article by Vanessa Fox on Search Engine Land, Google recently implement an algorithmic change in Google, “looking for higher quality sites to surface for long tail queries," and based on the all discussions Google say the change is here to stay.

So what exactly is changing?  And Why does it matter?  Based on the article, Vanessa says the change appears to be affecting content that is buried; i.e. it takes few clicks from the home page to access or doesn’t have many links pointing to it, either from the site itself or outside sources. We see this a lot with our e-commerce customers who manage large sites where it takes some drilling down through categories to get to a specific page.

Now that the changes have been implemented, the article suggest that you if you want to get SEO back on track you need to do several things.  First, you need isolate queries where changes have occurred, which can easily done with Google Analytics using the keyword report in conjunction with the date comparison function. Second, you should then run those queries on Google and see who’s ranking well and look at what they are doing that you aren’t.  Third, the article recommends that you flatten your navigation structure, meaning that you should restructure your navigation to ensure less clicking from the home page to specific product pages or articles; as each click is also an extra step for a search engine spider to take. The deeper something is buried, the less “important” it may appear to be in terms of ranking calculation.

Joomla vs. Wordpress

E-mail Print PDF

As a Web Hosting service provider, it wouldn't be a typical day if we didn't have a customer ask us, which one's better Joomla vs. Wordpress.  In response to that, this article focuses on some of the key differentiators and discusses some of the capabilities that both of these applications can provide to Hosting Metro's customes.  First off, does anybody know what makes them diferent?  Or are they actually more similar than most people think. This article discusses some of the key functions and differences of each system and why you may want to choose one over the other for your website.  The first question you need to ask is what is a CMS?  A Content Management System, or CMS, plays an important part in the web ecosystem and they are commonly used to control, organize, and publish content, such as advertisements, banners, web pages, widgets/extensions and forums.  When selecting a CMS, the need typically arises from a companies desire to have more dynamic content and streamlined organization while creating additional flexible in the types of content delivered to customers.

Joomla, an open source CMS, geared toward helping people create complex websites with little to no coding.  Similar to WordPress, Joomla also uses PHP and MySQL, and uses plug-in  extensions to help change, move, and edit page elements without the need for complicated coding. Joomla can be uses for blogs, websites, forums, and a host of other features. Joomla has become wildly popular in recent years as more people are designing websites now than ever and in consideration of full-disclosure Hosting Metro's forum was creating entirely on the Joomla framework.  WordPress, another open source application, is a CMS geared toward helping people publish blogs and websites without having to do any sort of in depth code writing. WordPress is coded in PHP and MySQL and uses an innovative widget system that allows you to change and move elements of the page around without editing any sort of PHP or HTML code. WordPress is the most popular blog software in use today, used by over 200 million websites worldwide.

Both Joomla and WordPress are incredibly easy to use. With thousands of tutorials, well documented help files, and expansive online communities willing to help you as you learn them, Joomla and WordPress both are a snap to learn. However, WordPress is generally considered easier to learn. WordPress's back-end content managment screen is very easy to navigate and clearly labeled. Joomla's back-end requires more time to navigate, as it is a maze of well-labeled but otherwise elaborate drop down menus.

Templates and customization are an area of strength for both applications.  Thousands of templates exist for both Joomla and WordPress, which makes it easy to find a perfect look for whatever you are creating.  You will probably spend more time looking for a template in comparison to building it once you have identified your preferred layout.  However, WordPress' themes tend to be more geared toward the blog layout, which is simple and straight-forward with little embellishment. Joomla provides a wide amount of templates with varied looks ranging from "bloggy" to cooperate, artistic to simple and clean. Joomla template developers have even begun to develop horizontal themed templates for websites, something previously not attempted by other CMS applications.

One way that both applications clearly try to differentiate themselves is by their use of widgets and extensions.  WordPress uses plug-in widgets, while Joomla uses plug-in extensions. So what's the difference?  In actuallity, not very much.  While widgets will work exclusively with WordPress and Joomla only supports extensions, conceptionally they do the same thing. Both have plug-ins that handle thousands of different features, including RSS feeds, social networking integration, tag clouds, custom HTML plug ins, comments, and so much more. Both have incredibly high quality and great support, so it really comes down to personal preference.

Probably the single biggest consideration when looking at a CMS, or any type of web application for your website is cost.  A key factor in both of these applications success is that both WordPress and Joomla are 100% free, open source, and easy to install.  With most hosting companies, including Hosting Metro's Web hosting plans, customers typically are only going to pay monthly hosting fees, and are able to install these applications by selecting it in their respective control panel.

I would like to say that the choice between Joomla and Wordpress systems depends on the purpose of your website and also on your knowledge of web development and design.  There is not just one system available for us to build our websites with, and so we should never limit ourselves to just one either. With so many different uses and ideas and opportunities that can be found in each, why should we anyone try so hard to make those CMS's that they dislike seem worst than their own.

Outlook error (0x800CCC7C) with SMTP server error '530 denied access'

E-mail Print PDF

A tech buddy of mine from Australia called me up on a really strange error he received in Outlook.  Outlook reports that the SMTP server requires a secured connection and is asking the user to enabled it. It even shows them where it is.  Trouble is, our server, which runs on Windows 2008 with Plesk and Mailenable, doesn't have SSL enabled.  Long story short, it turns out Mailenable has a secret deny file which can't be accessed from the GUI.

How Many URL's Does An SSL Certificate Protect

E-mail Print PDF

A question that I've been coming across a lot lately is related to SSL Certificates and whether they protect one domain, or several simultaneously.  Historically, when you bought what's called a non-wild card SSL certificate it would protect just one URL such as www.hostingmetro.com or hostingmetro.com.  Today, however our SSL Certificate providers Geotrust and RapidSSL automatically protect both the www and non-www portion at no extra charge.  Now as a comparison, goto http://www.hostingmetro.com/BusinessServices/E-Commerce.aspx and will see that there are multiple SSL Certificate options.  It's important to understand that not only do you have consider how many domains, but volume as well.  So using the URL above as a guide, here is the the differences between each certificate offering:
